Driving in UAE: Everything You Need to Know About Salik, Fines, and Insurance

In This Article

Driving in the UAE is a pleasure, thanks to the world-class infrastructure. However, the traffic rules are strict, and fines can be heavy. As a renter, it is your responsibility to be aware of these regulations to avoid extra charges on your final invoice.

1. Salik (Toll Gates) Dubai uses an automated toll system called “Salik”. There are no toll booths; you simply drive through the gates. Each time you pass a Salik gate, a fee of AED 5 is recorded. This amount will be deducted from your deposit or added to your final bill upon return.

2. Traffic Fines Traffic cameras (radars) are everywhere in Dubai. Common fines include speeding, lane indiscipline, and using a phone while driving. Please note that the renter is 100% responsible for all traffic fines incurred during the rental period.

3. Accidents and Insurance All our cars come with basic insurance as per UAE law. However, in the unfortunate event of an accident, you must obtain a Police Report.

  • Without a Police Report: You will be fully liable for all damages and repair costs.

  • With a Police Report: The insurance process can be initiated. There is an “Insurance Excess” fee (ranging from AED 1,500 upwards) which applies if the accident is your fault.

Drive safely, follow the speed limits, and keep your distance!
